“
So much has happened in the last 3 years. I moved to 3 different cities, met so many people, dared to do so many things. I feel like in these past years, every possible insecurity, every possible fear, but also every possible dream that I could’ve ever had has just happened, right in front of me. I just faced them, looked them in the eye, each and every single one of them. I opened up like I never had. I exposed myself like I never had. I got carried away. I stayed a bit longer. I fell deep. I bled out. One day, I wake up and I don't feel scared, not anymore. These years, I felt like I needed to honor them, to keep them forever in a special pedestal. ‘Defrost’ is my way of honoring the growth in me, the destruction of all of my teenage inner voices, and my own reminder to myself that, after all, I am free, that I am able, that I am important.”
SINGLES FROM DEFROST
“
‘Defrost’ is more inspired by the music I enjoy listening to, as opposed to ‘Discover’ which was inspired by the music I like singing to. The soundtrack of my teenage years were the likes of Björk, Sigur Rós, Iamamiwhoami, Bon Iver... Their music painted the landscapes I envisioned in my head. The north, mythical place, where everything seems to just work. The snow, the nature, the silence. In this album I wanted to blend all of those textures, but never leaving the pop field. I always felt like my logical next step was to keep writing pop hooks but drowning them in some more interesting ambient production. I wanted to create lush synths, wooden beats, ethereal soundscapes where my experiences up north could easily leave their prints. It all solidified when I got a chance to move there, and being right on the spot was even beyond my expectations.”
The 'Defrost' album cover was shot by Aniek Sealtiel in Jukkasjärvi, in the Swedish province of Lappland, past the Arctic circle.
“I was living in Sweden at the time. We managed to travel a lot, meet a lot of people in hostels and stuff. I think Aniek and I really became good friends after that trip. That night we were making memes about how the mine in Kiruna dictated the fate of all its habitants, and drinking vodka, playing card games... Every time I complained about people opening the doors to smoke, a northern light would appear, so people were even more motivated to go smoke, and shit. It was a time when a lot of stuff was happening, and this picture was just a product of the moment. It speaks to me how improvised it all was. How broken and how cold. How such spontaneous things can end up becoming so important.”
The "Off I Go" music video
Shot in Madrid on an overcast Monday morning, the music video co-directed by Sandra Rodas depicts Dowi dressing all black, as opposed to a background of white skies, green trees and grey skyscrapers. It was filmed at the Juan Carlos I park, right next to IFEMA, one of Madrid's core business areas.
“The video is meant to capture the junction of the city and nature. The cold concrete, the hazy clouds, the greens and ocres from the autumn trees. To me, it represents my need to find some oasis in the middle of the chaotic capitalist life, to find some time and space and be able to let my wounds heal, to get rest, to hibernate, and then open up again. It is both a hibernation and an awakening.”
"Off I Go" is the first music video ever released by Dowi. The city-nature duality depicted in it would go on to mark the aesthetic of the "Defrost" album and the following music video, "Moth", where Dowi takes the paths of another Madrid park, Parque del Oeste (West Park), to explore his inner desires.
